Smishing Project SMS Crowdsourcing

We are collecting SMSs that will help us build a model that can detect scam messages which are sent to mobile phone users in local (non-english) languages. By granting consent, you are giving us the permission to use any SMSs that you share for the purpose of this research objective and any other future research activities. In recording/collecting the messages, we do not record any personal information that can identify you in any way such as your mobile phone number.

Voluntary Participation

Your participation in this research by way of submitting messages is voluntary. You may discontinue participation at any time during the research activity.

Benefits, Compensation, and Costs

There is no compensation for participation in this study. You will not incur any costs or harm by participating in the study. The messages you share with us for the purpose of this study will help improve the detection of scam SMSs ultimately leading to prevention of mobile money financial fraud.

Risks

The risks and discomfort associated with participation in this study are no greater than those ordinarily encountered in daily life or during other online activities.

Future Use of the SMS messages

The data (pools of SMS messages) collected here may be used for our future research studies, or we may distribute the data to other researchers for their research studies. These messages will only be shared in their anonymised form, i.e., without your personal information like phone number. We would do this without getting additional consent from you (or your legally authorized representative). Sharing of data with other researchers will only be done in such a manner that you will not be identified.
